Garden tools before winter

Winter is a resting time for most garden plants. During this time, the tools that have been working intensively for the beautiful appearance of our garden from early spring to late autumn also gain some respite. However, in order for the new season to be efficient, we have to protect it properly before the arrival of winter. How do I do that?

Which tools require special attention?

Devices that must be adequately protected against winter include, but are not limited to

• lawnmower - is one of the most exploited tools in our garden. There's nothing weird about that. If you want your lawn to look beautiful, you need to cut it regularly, which is why you need a lawn mower. However, before we put the equipment back in the utility room, we need to take care of a few important issues.

We can't forget about it:

• disconnection of the spark plug - this is the first action we perform, thanks to which we will protect the equipment against accidental start-up,
• emptying the tank from unused fuel - petrol left in the tank may clog the equipment channels and cause corrosion. We should therefore absolutely remove it. We can do it simply by burning the fuel to the end or pouring it to the canister using a special suction.
• removing and sharpening the blade - this should be done with gloves to ensure your safety. In addition to sharpening the knives, the optimal brewing of the knives is also important. If we do not know exactly how to get started, we will entrust this task to specialists from the service.
• emptying the oil tank - on modern mowers, oil change is easy. They are equipped with special valves for oil removal. Just unscrew them, placing a vessel under the mower, into which the substance will drip. If you have a little older equipment, you can use a suction cup to remove the oil.
• cleaning the bottom of the mower from mud and grass residues - for this purpose we can use compressed air, garden hose or a traditional cleaner. If the dirt is dry, a spatula or wire brush may be particularly useful.

Remember, however, not to clean the mower with a pressure washer. It can damage sensitive parts of the device.

• air filter replacement - a dirty filter can effectively reduce equipment efficiency as it reduces fuel efficiency. This process requires access to air, and a dirty filter effectively blocks it.

If you have a paper filter in your lawnmower, just throw away the old one and replace it with the new one. When the equipment is equipped with a sponge filter, wash it, dry it, soak it in new oil, and finally reinstall it.

• chain - is another tool that should be taken care of before it goes to a well-deserved rest. In this case, it is necessary to remove dirt and clean any gaps where wood waste may have entered during operation. This is worth doing with a flat brush or compressed air. We must also not forget to check the chain tension.

Most of the tools that we use for garden care require adequate protection before they are forgotten for a few winter months. With simple maintenance such as washing, sharpening or replacement of worn parts, we can be sure that this equipment will work flawlessly in the spring.
