Applications of foamed polystyrene and mineral wool

In the construction industry, polystyrene foam and mineral wool are very often used to insulate buildings. These materials show excellent thermal insulation properties, hence their popularity and high efficiency.

Although styrofoam and mineral wool are most often used as insulation materials for building walls, they also have a number of other applications in which their properties work perfectly. What else can they be used for?

Styrofoam

Styrofoam is a commonly known building material. The name refers to expanded polystyrene, i.e. foamed polystyrene - EPS. It is an insulating material that almost 100% consists of air that stays still. Thanks to this, it insulates perfectly, but in order to obtain the best quality, it is worth choosing high-density foamed polystyrene - it has larger particles that are perfectly adjacent to each other. Thanks to its excellent insulation properties, this material is used successfully in insulating walls of buildings, making from it an insulating layer, but not only. These are other applications of foamed polystyrene.

Roof insulation

Warm air escapes from buildings not only through uninsulated walls. Because the heated air is lighter than the cool air, it rises upwards and can then escape through the roof. For this reason, it is advisable to install a foamed polystyrene insulation layer between the rafters to prevent heat loss.

Floor insulation

Styrofoam can also be used to create an insulation layer for the floor laid on the ground. The heat loss from the building to the ground is about 20% of the total heat loss in the heat balance. Therefore, it is worth applying an insulating layer of polystyrene foam under the floor surface, which lies directly on the ground. What is more, it is required by construction law. This floor construction ensures less energy loss and therefore more savings. When designing an insulation layer placed in such a place, care must be taken to ensure that it is stress-resistant and durable.

Mineral wool

Mineral wool, like Styrofoam, is an excellent insulation material. Its properties result from the fact that it has a low heat conductivity between the fibres. Wool can also effectively dampen noise and vibrations. For this reason, it is also widely used in the construction industry, but it is also used in the power industry. There are two types of mineral wool: glass wool and rock wool. Both are used in construction due to their fire resistance and non-flammability, which makes them extremely safe material. Here are some of the most popular applications for mineral wool.

Suspended ceilings and soundproofing

Mineral wool slabs are installed between the ceiling and shielding elements in structures such as suspended ceilings and act as sound absorbers. It is worth noting that wool placed in open spaces can increase ceiling insulation against air or impact noise, which can occur especially during rainy or windy weather. It provides much greater comfort for residents and people staying in the building.

Water systems and their silencing

Mineral wool is also used to insulate water systems and for central heating and silencing. In such cases, the wool absorbs the vibrations of the cables and the noise generated during the operation of the systems.

Wall insulation

According to research, about 40% of the heat from a building is lost through walls without a thermal insulation layer. Mineral wool can be laid on both indoor and outdoor walls to reduce heating costs and provide residents with a pleasant temperature in winter and summer. An additional advantage of mineral wool used as an insulation material for partition walls is the soundproofing, so the building is not only insulated, but also silenced, which significantly increases the comfort of people staying in it.

Mineral wool and foamed polystyrene are excellent insulation materials, which will prove effective in insulating the walls of buildings. By using them, you can save on heating and prevent heat loss, thus ensuring more efficient energy management in your home.
