Unusual stories of some start ups and downs
Silicon Valley is one of the most famous places in the world and at the same time a true Mecca for all those interested in business. Recently, an interesting story happened there, which perfectly shows how extremely well the railways can sometimes run, even small, not very promising start - up. Start - up was prepared by a relatively small group of about 40 people. It was only 1.5 years old, and during that time it has not done much to determine what it is supposed to do at all. However, the Silicon Valley has recently literally snuffed out the news that the launch - up takes over a powerful British company employing more than 1000 people and producing professional sound systems. But what made such a small company absorb such a giant?
The company in question is Bowers & Wilkins. The company has been present on the market for over half a century, during which it managed to gain recognition among lovers of good sound system and music - this brand equipment was also used by the greatest professionals in the industry. One of the most important shareholders in the company was Joe Atkins, who recently announced that he was selling all his shares to a small Silicon Valley company that nobody had heard of. The company is called Eve Automation, a San Francisco-based company... And we don't actually know anything more about him. The situation is unbelievable - after all, it is usually large, long-established companies that take over small start-ups - upy. This time, however, something exactly the opposite happened.
The uniqueness of this situation is further enhanced by the fact that, in fact, nobody even knows what Eve Automation does or who creates it. In the market it would be in vain to look for any product or service offered by the company, nor is it known that the company has been profitable for the whole period of its existence. Little information is even available on its website; in a rather loose way, we can only learn there that the company wants to deal with home furnishings or interior furnishings. It is therefore difficult not to be surprised when such a small, unknown company and not fully defined profile of business receives suddenly from the investor 20 million dollars, and all points to the fact that in the next injections of cash will flow into it still a good few hundred million. The ultimate goal of this financing is the acquisition of Bowers & Wilkins.
Little is known about the Eve Automation team. All we know is that the company is built largely by employees previously associated with Apple or Google. Its president, Gideon Yu, previously worked as a financial advisor to YouTube. Therefore, it cannot be said that the company is created by young, inexperienced people who have never had contact with this market before. On the other hand, it cannot be said that during the first several months of its activity it has been particularly active.
The objectives of such a takeover may vary, but it is most likely a matter of keeping pace with modern technology and trends. Bowers & Wilkins has been manufacturing excellent sound equipment for decades, and its quality has delighted even the most demanding professionals. Today, however, this is not enough - modern public address equipment must also have good software to integrate with applications such as Spotify. As far as the whole transaction is concerned, the combination of the old brand with the new team created mainly by IT people really does make sense.
